Sensitization on Dengue fever
With hospitals packed with patients and an increasing tally of infections, Bhutan is grappling with its worst dengue fever outbreak on record this year (2019), according to official data.
The disease is endemic mosquito-borne disease that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, where heavy rains during the monsoon season have created the perfect breeding ground for the mosquito-borne
Dr. Dechen Kezang of Dewathang Military hospital said "The first endemic dengue outbreak in Bhutan was reported in 2004 in Phuentsholing with more than 2,000 cases, then it had started declining with 850 cases in 2016, 240 cases in 2017 and only 20 cases in 2018." "This year's outbreak is unprecedented, with hospitals registering more than 2600 cases," he added. He also said that , symptoms during a dengue outbreak included high fever, severe headache, pain behind eyes, muscle and joint pain, and rashes.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue is caused by a virus with four distinct strands. Recovery from infection by one provides lifelong immunity against that particular strand, but subsequent infection by other strands increases the risk of developing severe dengue.
“In dengue, what we have to remember is, the first attack, normally you suffer but no chance of death unless already you have cancer, diabetes, or some other diseases. But the second attack dengue is dangerous. During the second attack, we have to be more alert because the blood platelet will go down and that can kill the person. And our health facility can transfuse the platelets and save the person. So, that is why it is important for people to use the health facility,” said Ugen Dophu, the Secretary for Health Ministry.
According to the The chief programme officer with Department of Public Health (DoPH), Ministry of Health, Rixin Jamtsho, said that 77 percent of the total cases in the country were reported from Phuentsholing hospital. “The cases were reported from 19 dzongkhags,” Rixin Jamtsho said. “Majority of the cases reported from other districts had travelled to Phuentsholing prior to their illness.”
Kuensel dated September 9, 2019 revealed that ,a strategy to tackle disease outbreak like the recent dengue outbreak in Phuentsholing will be drawn up and implemented from next year. Meeting the management of Phuentsholing general hospital on September 8, Prime Minister Lyonchhen Dr Lotay Tshering said that if implemented well ahead of tome in phase wise, the number of people affected will be cut down to single digits.
As there is currently no effective vaccine against dengue and no specific treatment for the disease, controlling and preventing dengue fever outbreaks are essential steps for keeping people healthy. Primary preventative measure to reduce dengue infections is the control of mosquito populations. Because the transmission of dengue requires mosquitoes as vectors, the spread of dengue can be limited by reducing mosquito populations.
When container habitats are removed and water storage containers are covered with a fine mesh to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside them, mosquitoes have fewer opportunities to lay eggs and cannot develop through their aquatic life stages. Source reduction can be effective when performed regularly, especially when members of a community are mobilized and educated about vector control.
