Three Arrested in Thimphu for Biggest Drug Seizure in Recent History

On 30th August 2023, the Narcotic Drugs and Law Enforcement Unit made a significant breakthrough in their ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking. Two men and a woman, aged between 26 to 29 years, were apprehended for their involvement in the illicit trafficking of drugs from Yoeselpang, Thimphu.
The operation unfolded when the enforcement team intercepted a Bolero pickup truck at the Yoeselpang vegetable shed. Inside the vehicle were the driver and a woman, arousing suspicion among the officers. Acting on their instincts, a search was conducted at their residence, leading to the discovery of two cartoon boxes (equivalent to 21 packets) containing SP+ capsules hidden beneath the wooden floor. Additionally, 14 packages of SP+ were found neatly wrapped in a bedsheet inside a red laundry basket. The total quantity of SP+ (Tramadol) capsules seized amounted to a staggering 39,011, making it the largest drug seizure to date.

Further developments in the case led to the arrest of the woman's husband from Thimphu town later that same night. The initial interrogation revealed that the couple had procured the drugs from a vegetable vendor in Jaigoan.

The Narcotic Drugs and Law Enforcement Unit, Thimphu, is now intensifying their investigation to track down the network involved in the trafficking operation.
