Dalai Lama Congratulates Bhutanese Prime Minister-Elect
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has sent a warm message of congratulations to Dasho Tshering Tobgay, the Prime Minister-Elect of Bhutan. In his letter, the Dalai Lama acknowledged the historic relationship between the Tibetan and Bhutanese people, and commended Bhutan's progress in democratic governance.
"As Tibetans, we share a historic relationship with the Bhutanese people, and as someone strongly committed to democratic values, I have followed your country's commendable development in democratic governance, under the farsighted leadership of the Druk Gyalpo, over the past several years,"wrote the Dalai Lama.
The spiritual leader also expressed his confidence in Dasho Tshering Tobgay's leadership and his hope that Bhutan's unique combination of modernization and preservation of tradition will continue to thrive under his tenure.
"Bhutan today is developing along modern lines, while preserving its traditional religion and culture. I am sure under your tenure, you will see that it continues to be strengthened.
Our two peoples have a distinct form of Buddhism in common. Our religious tradition is not merely based on faith, but can also be of practical benefit to humanity at large. Our Kagyur and Tengyur, which are collections of translated words of Buddha and treatises by subsequent Indian masters, contain a wealth of knowledge about it,"he added.
The Dalai Lama's message serves as a reminder of the special relationship between Tibetans and Bhutanese and a call to continue strengthening the bond between the two peoples.
